Answers to common questions

Find out more about UAB Medicine and how we provide a better state of care to all Alabamians.

What is UAB Medicine?

UAB Medicine is a combined health system that includes UAB Hospital, UAB St. Vincent’s, and UAB Medical West, plus the many outpatient clinics and community practices operated by each hospital. We provide inpatient, outpatient, emergency, and specialty care, with coordination across all facilities and campuses.

Why did UAB St. Vincent’s and UAB Medical West become part of UAB Medicine?

Both organizations already played an important role in helping UAB Medicine provide care to more patients in their own communities. By working together more closely as one system, it helps us improve access to care, expand services across the region, align clinical standards, and provide more seamless experiences and specialized resources closer to where patients live.

Are there other hospitals and clinics that are part of UAB Medicine?

Yes. UAB Health System, which is part of UAB Medicine, has several affiliates and members of our care network throughout Alabama, including:

  • Whitfield Regional Hospital (Demopolis)
  • Baptist Health System (Montgomery)
  • Cooper Green Mercy Health Services (Birmingham)
  • J. Paul Jones Hospital (Camden)
  • Russell Medical (Alexander City)
What services are available?

UAB Medicine provides a full range of acute inpatient care, emergency services, medical and surgical specialty care, and advanced diagnostics, along with outpatient primary and specialty care at numerous clinics. Many of these services are available in rural communities, though services may vary by location. Learn more by visiting the individual websites for each hospital.

Will my local hospital or clinic continue operating in the same way?

The services and local staff will remain the same, but you may begin seeing new and expanded services. We are making a special effort to ensure that our rural and community hospitals and clinics retain the culture and atmosphere that patients have come to expect.

Does this affect where I go for emergency care?

No, the emergency departments operated by each hospital will remain open and continue serving patients. If you have a life-threatening emergency, please call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department.

Will I need to change my primary care provider or specialist?

No, you can keep your current provider(s).

Will my medical records change or move to a different patient portal?

We are consolidating patient records into a single electronic health record (EHR) for all of UAB Medicine, to improve the coordination of your care. In the future, your medical records will be available at all facilities throughout our health system, making it easier for you to receive care at any location that’s convenient for you.

This change also will include a new patient portal system called MyChart, which will require all patients to create a new online account. You will be notified about this ahead of time and given clear instructions on how to create an account and use the new patient portal.

Will billing be affected?

We are working to streamline billing processes and make it easier to pay your bill throughout UAB Medicine. You can expect to receive clear billing statements, with contact information included on these statements and on the websites for each hospital or clinic. You will be informed of any important changes that may affect you.

How can I find a location that’s most convenient for me?

Please visit one of these three websites to see a complete list of care sites operated by each hospital.
