Bariatric Surgery Services
Bariatric, or weight loss surgery, is for people who have morbid obesity or have obesity within the morbid obesity BMI range, and already have tried diets, exercise, and other non-surgical ways to lose weight.
About bariatric surgery
UAB Medicine offers two types of bariatric surgery, and both are designed to help you eat less and lose weight. Patients must meet certain goals and requirements before surgery can be approved, and this usually requires a serious commitment to making major lifestyle changes. In most cases, patients must have a body mass index (BMI) of at least 40 to qualify. Patients with a BMI of 35-39 may qualify if they also have a medical condition such as diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, or severe arthritis.
UAB Medicine’s Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Program has been performing weight-loss procedures for more than 40 years. It was the first American College of Surgeons (ACS) Level 1 Bariatric Surgery Center in Alabama, and it is approved by the ACS Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP). The program is committed to helping patients lose weight through surgery and support from therapists, dietitians, and the UAB Weight Loss Medicine Clinic.
