UAB Medicine

Know Your Care Team

UAB Hospital is a teaching hospital and as such, a team of physicians will take care of you. All physicians and staff are required to prominently display a photo identification badge that displays their name and functional title. All members of the care team are expected to introduce themselves, educate you about their role in your care and what you can expect.

Physicians

Your care will be coordinated by an Attending Physician in collaboration with other physicians which may include the following:

  • Consulting Physician – may see you at the request of your Attending Physician for specialized needs
  • Fellow Physician – a medical doctor pursuing in-depth knowledge in a specialized area of medicine
  • Resident Physician- a medical doctor enrolled in an educational program to expand his or her knowledge prior to practicing alone
  • Medical Student – may observe your care or assist in limited ways

All physicians on your care team work together to provide clinical expertise. Although your physician team may change during your stay, we expect all physicians will introduce themselves when they join the team.

Registered Nurse (RN)

UAB Hospital is recognized as a Center for Nursing Excellence and is the only adult-care hospital in the state of Alabama that has earned Magnet status, a designation awarded by the American Nurses Association. Our nursing staff will work with all members of your care team to coordinate your treatment
and answer questions about your diagnosis or care plan.

Nurse Manager

The Nurse Manager of each patient care unit is responsible for overseeing the operations of that unit. If you have any concerns, comments, or compliments about your care or the unit, we encourage you to speak with your Nurse Manager.

Patient Care Technician (PCT)

Patient Care Technicians will assist nurses with vital signs, drawing blood, and performing EKGs.

Pharmacists

Pharmacists are critical members of the care team. They prepare medication and monitor drug therapy for side effects, allergies, and food and drug interaction.

Registered Dietitian

A Registered Dietitian will evaluate your nutritional needs and work with your physician for any diet modifications to improve your health.

Care Management and Social Services

Care Managers and Medical Social Workers will assist you in the discharge planning and care coordination process.

Other members of your care team may include Respiratory Therapy, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Speech Therapy. You will meet members of the Environmental Services team that will ensure your room is clean and tidy. Your Food Service hostess will assist you with your meals.
