UAB a Favorite Among Birmingham Parents
Best Hospital NICU
UAB Hospital’s Women & Infants Center , winner of Best Hospital NICU and runner up in Best Hospital to Have a Baby and Best Birthing Suite, has recently entered its second year of operation. UAB’s Regional NICU is the only Level IIIC (the highest level) NICU in the state, in conjunction with the Children’s Hospital of Alabama located adjacent to the Center, and is the only NICU in the state with full perinatal and pediatric cardiovascular services.
UAB’s survival rate and rate of survival without handicap for all premature babies is among the best in the country year after year. Unlike other area hospitals, UAB’s specialized neonatology physicians are in the hospital 24 hours a day, seven days a week, every day of the year to provide specialized care to babies in need. The NICU treats 1,500 infants each year and is the largest all-private room NICU in the country. The Women & Infants Center is also home to a Continuing Care Nursery (CCN), providing extended step-down care. In-room sleep space in both the NICU and CCN allows parents to stay with their babies around the clock.
The Women and Infants Center features immaculate, private birthing suites with full bathrooms, flat screen TVs, pullout couches, room service meals, and 24-hour care from skilled, compassionate physicians and staff.

Best Fertility Specialist
G. Wright Bates, MD, associate professor and director of the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, received Best Fertility Specialist honors. Dr. Bates, an Alabama native and UAB School of Medicine graduate who completed his fertility training at Harvard Medical School, has helped countless couples conceive, participated in almost 5,000 In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) cycles, and delivered more than 1,000 babies.
"It is an honor to be recognized by the parents of Birmingham, but even more rewarding to help couples become parents," Dr. Bates said.
UAB’s Infertility Program offers the most advanced treatments and technology in the field in a warm and caring private-practice setting. As a University-affiliated practice, UAB infertility specialists keep abreast of the latest treatment advances and participate in many ground-breaking research developments. The full range of infertility treatments are offered, including IVF and the most advanced treatments for fertility preservation and restoration in patients suffering from cancer or other serious medical conditions that may threaten an individual or couple’s chance of having children.
Best Family-Friendly Employer
Flexible hours, competitive benefits, fair compensation, and solid management are cornerstones of a career at UAB, and likely reasons UAB received Best Family-Friendly Employer. UAB's work environment allows each employee to excel in his or her career and maintain a healthy, balanced family life.
2,500 people participated in the Parent’s Choice Awards poll on bhammag.com throughout March and April 2011. Winners were chosen in 67 categories, from healthcare to birthday cake.
