The UAB Division of Maternal and Fetal Medicine is one of the nation's top programs of its kind, providing high-risk obstetric care with the most advanced diagnostic services and treatments for women with special pregnancy concerns, including advanced age, multiple fetuses, diabetes, complicated pregnancy history or other medical conditions. UAB obstetricians are specialists and subspecialists in their field, and provide the highest level of care for our patients. All of UAB's high-risk care physicians hold board certifications in both obstetrics and gynecology and maternal-fetal medicine. One is also board-certified in genetics. Doctors at UAB are nationally recognized experts in caring for women with complicated pregnancies. The team also includes a personal labor nurse and three anesthesia specialists for cesarean delivery and epidural care.

Our Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) physicians are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Our high-tech care includes:

  • First trimester diagnosis
  • Genetic testing and counseling
  • The most advanced ultrasound and fetal imaging capabilities
  • 24-hour in-house Maternal-Fetal Medicine physicians and neonatologists

After Hours and Emergencies

What to Bring with You
When you come to your appointment, please bring your insurance card, all prescription and over the counter medications that you are currently taking, and any additional information your referring physician has not already sent to our clinic.

Special Instructions
We kindly ask that you arrive at least 30 minutes before a new patient appointment to allow for adequate time for completing registration paperwork. Also, please allow 72 hours for obtaining a physician referral or pre-certification.

Payment Information
We accept most forms of insurance; however, check with us to make sure that your particular coverage is approved. When you visit, please bring the proper insurance identification cards so that we can submit your claims to your insurance company. If you are required to file personally for your company's insurance, we will provide you with all necessary forms to file your own claim. When your visit is completed, you will be expected to pay any charges that will not be reimbursed by insurance (e.g. co-payments and deductibles), unless you have made prior arrangements with one of our financial counselors. Because your insurance coverage is a contract between you and your insurance company, it is your responsibility to obtain any physician referral precertification that your insurance company requires in order for your visit to be covered.

Labs/Test Results
Please allow 2-4 weeks from the time of any labs or tests performed in this clinic for results to be completely processed. You will be notified of any normal test results either by telephone, mail, or at your next office visit. Please be aware that any emergent abnormal lab or test values will be relayed to you by your physician as soon as the results are obtained.

Prescriptions
To obtain a refill for any medications prescribed by this clinic, please call your physician’s office directly. When calling our offices, please have your pharmacy telephone number available to provide to our staff. Please allow 24-48 hours for routine prescriptions to be filled. We also suggest calling your drugstore prior to pick-up to verify that your medication is ready.
