First Trimester Screening Clinic

First trimester screening offers patients the earliest possible assessment of risk for Down syndrome. Patients who receive a screen positive result can make earlier decisions regarding diagnostic testing. At the First Trimester Screening Clinic, UAB Maternal and Fetal Medicine experts offer first trimester screening testing as one of several screening options to estimate the risk of fetal Down syndrome or Trisomy 18. The test consists of an ultrasound examination of the fetus and a maternal blood test performed between 11 weeks 0 days and 13 weeks 6 days of pregnancy. After test results are received, further diagnostic procedures are performed as needed.

What to Bring with You
When you come to your appointment, please bring your insurance card, all prescription and over the counter medications that you are currently taking, and any additional information your referring physician has not already sent to our clinic.

Special Instructions
We kindly ask that you arrive at least 30 minutes before a new patient appointment to allow for adequate time for completing registration paperwork. Also, please allow 72 hours for obtaining a physician referral or pre-certification.

Payment Information
We accept most forms of insurance; however, check with us to make sure that your particular coverage is approved. When you visit, please bring the proper insurance identification cards so that we can submit your claims to your insurance company. If you are required to file personally for your company's insurance, we will provide you with all necessary forms to file your own claim. When your visit is completed, you will be expected to pay any charges that will not be reimbursed by insurance (e.g. co-payments and deductibles), unless you have made prior arrangements with one of our financial counselors. Because your insurance coverage is a contract between you and your insurance company, it is your responsibility to obtain any physician referral precertification that your insurance company requires in order for your visit to be covered.

Labs/Test Results
Please allow 2-4 weeks from the time of any labs or tests performed in this clinic for results to be completely processed. You will be notified of any normal test results either by telephone, mail, or at your next office visit. Please be aware that any emergent abnormal lab or test values will be relayed to you by your physician as soon as the results are obtained.
