Women and Infants Classes

UAB Women and Infants services provides numerous classes for expectant and new moms.

You can sign up for any of the classes online by visiting the links below.

• Baby Basics 101
  Come and learn the basics of infant care to help get you through the first few weeks at home. Taught by an RN, this one-time, 2 hour, class will have you diapering and bathing "babies" like a pro. This is a great class for not only expectant parents but also for grandparents, adoptive parents, and anyone else who wants to learn the basics of baby care. Fee is $10/couple.

• Breastfeeding
  Learn the how-to's of breastfeeding with the help of our Lactation Consultants. This 2-hour class will help you know what to expect, how to get started, and how to make breastfeeding fit into your lifestyle. Fee includes Dad and other support people. "Five star" recommended class!

• Breathing & Relaxation Techniques
  Bring 2 pillows and a blanket, wear comfortable clothes, and prepare for labor and delivery! In this 2-hour class, you will learn and practice how to use relaxation and breathing techniques and personalized comfort measures for labor and delivery. Fee is per couple. If you have taken the New Life series, there is no charge for this class.

• Happiest Baby on the Block
  Let us help you have the 'Happiest Baby on the Block'! In just an hour and a half, you will learn and practice Dr. Harvey Karp's bestselling book's technique for calming and soothing even the fussiest baby. This class is a must for expectant or new parents! Fee is $10 per couple.

• Infant CPR
  Learn how to perform infant CPR and manage the choking infant according to American Heart Association guidelines for 'Friends and Family'. Come ready to practice on our Infant CPR dolls. Whether you're the expectant parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, or friend----this class is for you. Fee is $10 per couple.

• Labor & Delivery Tour
  Come tour with us! See the Maternity Evaluation Unit (MEU), Labor and Delivery, and our Mother/Baby Units in this 1-hour tour. For free parking, park in the deck at 4th Ave. South and 18th Street. Please bring your parking ticket to class. There is a charge to park in the Women and Infants Center lot.

• Marvelous Multiples
  A life with multiples is like no other! You will not only learn about what to expect with your pregnancy, delivery, and caring for more than one, but you will also meet other parents who share your same excitement. This one day, weekend class, is for those expecting twins and more.

• New Additions: Sibling Class
  If you are about to become a big brother or sister, and you are between 3 and 8 years old, this 1-hour class is for you! Parents---we would love to help you prepare siblings for the birth of a new brother or sister. One parent must attend with child.

• New Life Refresher Classes
  The first two classes of the NEW LIFE SERIES. Provides a review of what to expect in Labor & Delivery and includes a tour. Great for couples thinking of VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean)!

• New Life Series
  The New Life series is a comprehensive preparation for childbirth course. Expectant parents will learn about what to expect in the last trimester of pregnancy, labor and delivery, the post-partum period, and caring for a new baby. Get all your questions answered! You will also learn comfort measures and breathing and relaxation techniques for labor and delivery. This series meets for five, 2-hour, evening sessions or as a Saturday, one day, weekend series. The class fee includes both Mom and Dad/Support person and a labor and delivery tour.

• Girl Talk
  For girls--8 to 12 years old----and moms (or a trusted adult) Have a question about your changing body, how you feel these days, friends, or boys? Come learn all about growing up-----and have fun, too! Fee: $5/girl (moms are free!)
