Radiology Overview

The UAB Radiology program offers a wealth of technology, including radioactive substances, electromagnetic radiation, and sound waves, to create images of the body, its organs, and structures for the purpose of aiding UAB physicians with diagnosis and treatment. UAB radiologists read and interpret a wide variety of medical tests and report the results to UAB doctors so that they can rule out or accurately treat medical conditions.

UAB Radiology uses diagnostic tests such as X-rays to look at broken bones, PET scans to see tumors or changes in the brain, ultrasounds to guide biopsies, MRIs to show spine lesions, and mammograms to screen for breast cancer. Radiation therapy can be used to treat cancer or fibroid tumors, and radiology can even deliver chemotherapy and other agents directly to the tumor’s blood supply. UAB Radiology works with every department within the UAB Health System.
