What to Bring with You to Your Liver Transplant Evaluation
Please bring the following items when you come to your appointment: your insurance card; all prescriptions and over-the-counter medications you are currently taking (or a list of these);
x-rays, lab results, or other medical information that your referring physician has not already sent to our clinic; and the blue patient information form that was mailed to you.

Special Instructions
To allow adequate time for check-in, please arrive at least 15 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment time. You will likely be seen by several people as part of the transplant evaluation process, and more than one day of testing may be required for your evaluation. The transplant doctor or nurse practitioner and other members of the transplant team will meet with you and order some or all of the following tests:

  • Complete medical history and physical examination
  • Social service evaluation to discuss your lifestyle and how you and your family might cope with transplant surgery
  • Laboratory tests to evaluate your other organ systems
  • Chest x-ray
  • Ultrasound and/or CT scan
  • MRI (magnetic resonance imaging)
  • Electrocardiogram
  • Echocardiogram
  • Pulmonary function test
  • Psychiatric evaluation

Payment Information
Some insurance providers may require a referral or pre-certification before seeing a specialist of this nature. Please be sure to bring a copy of this referral or pre-certification with you for insurance/billing purposes. If you are unsure of what your insurance company requires, it’s important to contact them in advance of your appointment. Your co-pay is expected at the time of your visit; however, our financial counselors are available to discuss any problems or special circumstances. Our financial counselors can be reached Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. at (205) 801-9910.

Labs/Test Results
Depending on your physician, your lab results may be discussed with you on your return visit, mailed to your home, or given to you over the phone by a member of our staff. Although it may take up to two weeks to receive the results of some specific tests that may be ordered, please be aware that any emergent abnormal lab or test values will be relayed to you by your physician as soon as the results are available.

Prescriptions
The UAB Liver Transplant Clinic cannot prescribe medication to new patients prior to their appointment. Please contact your referring physician for all prescription needs prior to your new patient appointment. Once you are an established patient in our clinic, you will be given a telephone number to contact your physician’s office directly for all prescription refill needs.

Patient Education
Patient education is a primary focus of the UAB Liver Transplant program.  There are many sources of patient education that members of the transplant team may discuss with you during your visit, including educational booklets, pre- and post-transplant classes, and support groups.

Patients with Limitations
Patients visiting the Kirklin Clinic may take advantage of convenient parking in the deck adjacent to the Clinic. Located at 2100 6th Avenue South, the parking deck is connected to the second floor of the Kirklin Clinic of UAB Hospital by a weatherproof sky bridge. High-top van access is restricted to the first floor of the clinic parking deck. Therefore, patients arriving in high-top vans and requiring wheelchair assistance should be dropped off at the front door of the clinic before the driver parks the vehicle. Valet parking is available on Level 2 of the deck; wheelchairs and additional assistance are located here as well.

UAB Heart, Lung and Liver Transplant Support Group

When: The second Monday of the month (except December) at 5:45 p.m.
Where: Conference Room E of the West Pavilion Conference Center at UAB Hospital.
Who: The Support Group is open to all pre/post transplant recipients (including kidney transplant recipients), family members, friends and those interested in organ transplantation.

The purpose of this Support Group is to help pre/post transplant patients through the transplant journey by networking with people who have been through the process. We answer questions that only other transplant recipients can answer. We do not give medical advice.

In addition, our group promotes donor awareness at every opportunity - from standing in the grocery line talking about organ donation to participating in the U.S. Transplant Games. Many associates volunteer with numerous organizations such as the Alabama Organ Center, the Bridges Foundation, the Alabama Kidney Foundation, the National Kidney Foundation, etc.

Reservations are not required to attend this support group. However, if you would like additional information, contact Stan Smith at (205) 655-3151 and leave a message.

Additionally, there is also a newsletter provided for this group. If you would like to receive the newsletter, call the number above and leave your name, address, telephone number and e-mail address.
