Psychiatry, Geriatric - Overview
Geriatric Psychiatry at UAB treats a full spectrum of emotional and mental disorders in elderly patients. Our goal is to promote and encourage research into psychiatric disorders and conditions particularly in Alzheimer’s disease. Geriatric Psychiatry provides exceptional and compassionate training for residents and medical students on how to properly care for and treat elderly psychiatric patients.

- Alzheimer’s Disease
- Neurodegenerative Diseases
- Severe Depression
- Dementia
- Schizophrenia
- Anxiety Disorders
Services Provided
Some services that may be provided by Geriatric Psychiatry at UAB include:
- Inpatient services provided for patients who are acutely ill and can no longer remain independently at home or at other facilities
- Inpatient and outpatient services to treat illness and psychiatric disorders
- Outpatient clinics provide follow-up on previously seen patients and initial evaluations of those who do not require immediate hospitalization
- Evaluations including neuroimaging, electroencephalograms, OT assessments, mini-mental state examinations and Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) and Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scans
