Family Medicine Overview

Family Medicine at UAB offers primary care for patients of all ages and treats a wide variety of acute and chronic conditions while having access to all of UAB’s specialists and technology.

Some conditions treated by Family Medicine at UAB include:
  • Acute conditions such as:
    • Infections (lung, bladder, kidney, etc.)
    • Rashes
    • Strains
    • Sprains
    • Minor injuries
  • Chronic conditions such as:
    • Hypertension
    • Diabetes
    • Asthma
    • Arthritis
    • Long-term care management of illness or disease
 Services provided by Family Medicine at UAB include:
  • Annual health evaluations
  • Physical exams
  • Preventive care, including health screening and physical exams for individuals of all ages
  • Routine care for women, including pap smears, pelvic, and breast exams
  • Well-child care
  • Gynecologic care
  • Flu shots and routine immunizations
  • Treatment of minor injuries
  • Incision and drainage of simple abscesses
  • Repair of minor wounds and cuts
  • Routine tests such as EKGs and spirometry
  • Referral to UAB specialists for complicated tests (MRI, CT, ultrasound, etc.)
  • On-site laboratory, radiology, and pharmacy services available
