University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Health System is an academic health center located in Birmingham, Alabama. At UAB we pride ourselves as being the premier medical facility in the state and region, with healthcare professionals who are second to none.

The centerpiece of the UAB Health System is UAB Hospital, one of the largest and most advanced in the nation. It was established in 1945 as the teaching hospital for what now is the UAB School of Medicine. Situated among major research centers and clinics, UAB Hospital provides patients with a complete range of primary and specialty care services, as well as the most up-to-date treatments and innovations in health care. As a university hospital, UAB Hospital is a major center for clinical research and home to some of the top medical programs in America.

UAB is the largest academic medical center in Alabama and one of the largest academic medical centers in the United States.

  • UAB's nationally ranked Heart and Vascular Services provides the full spectrum of cardiovascular care and performs the most advanced cardiovascular, peripheral vascular, and thoracic surgery procedures available.
  • The UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center provides oncology treatment and care and performs some of the nation's most advanced cancer research, utilizing the largest cyclotron in a U.S. academic medical center.
  • As the only Adult Level I Trauma Center in Alabama, UAB Hospital is equipped to handle any medical emergency.
  • Our level IV Regional Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is the only one of its kind in Alabama, caring for the sickest newborns in the state and region.

UAB Hospital - licensed for 1,157 beds and dedicated to top-quality patient care. Facilities include:

  • UAB Hospital-Highlands - A general acute care facility located on the edge of Birmingham's Medical Center District providing emergency care, orthopeadics, pain management, occupational medicine, and the region's first coordinated care unit for geriatric patients.
  • The Kirklin Clinic of UAB Hospital - Covers a full city block with 430,000 square feet, more than 30 distinct clinics of multidisciplinary teams (connected to UAB Hospital via enclosed skyway), and an adjacent covered parking deck that accommodates 1,450 vehicles.
  • Spain Rehabilitation Center - One of the Southeast's foremost providers of comprehensive rehabilitation care with nationally recognized programs designed to address all aspects of patients' rehabilitation, including physical, social and psychological health. Linked by enclosed skyway to UAB Hospital's North Pavilion.
  • Women and Infants Center - Designed with patient comfort and family-centered care in mind and providing advanced medical technology dedicated to healthy and high-risk pregnant women and newborns, as well as women receiving care for various gynecological problems, including cancer. Linked by enclosed skyway to the North Pavilion.
  • Center for Psychiatric Medicine - Provides inpatient clinical services including addiction recovery, child and adolescent treatment, and geriatric psychiatry in a dedicated facility. Linked by enclosed skyway to the North Pavilion.

The Kirklin Clinic at Acton Road - Offers a multidisciplinary approach to cancer, heart/vascular care, and an array of other services south of the city.

UAB Health Centers - Includes metro area neighborhood clinics in Hoover, Hueytown, Inverness, and Moody. For convenience, UAB physicians also are available at primary care locations in Huntsville, Montgomery, Selma, and Tuscaloosa.

UAB Callahan Eye Hospital - Provides the latest in ophthalmic microsurgery, corneal transplantation, laser cataract surgery, and an emergency department dedicated to treating trauma to the eye.

UAB Urgent Care - A walk-in clinic for patients with pressing medical needs, open seven days a week with no appointment necessary and conveniently located near UAB in midtown Birmingham.

UAB School of Medicine - Offers clinical training programs in Birmingham, Huntsville, Tuscaloosa, Selma, and Montgomery.

University of Alabama Health Services Foundation, P.C. - An 1,100-member multispecialty physician practice serving UAB Medicine through more than 30 centers of excellence.

The UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center – One of the eight original highest-level centers as designated by the National Cancer Institute when the "war on cancer" was declared in 1971 (there are now 41 such centers), and it remains the only one in a six-state region that includes Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, and South Carolina.
