Callahan Eye Hospital

Since opening in 1963, thousands of patients have received state-of-the-art ophthalmic care and it has become a regional, national and international referral facility. The staff of Callahan Eye Hospital (CEH) represents each of seven subspecialties. Serving as a tertiary referral center for ophthalmology, we provide care to the general ophthalmology patient, glaucoma, retina / vitreous, cornea, ocular plastics, pediatric ophthalmology, and neurological ophthalmology. Working together our medical staff of 87 ophthalmologists is comprised of both community physicians and full-time faculty at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and serves as a remarkable example of “town and gown” collegiality.

Optical Shoppe
We offer a full-service Optical Shoppe conveniently located in the lobby of the Callahan Eye Hospital, with over 900 different eyeglass frames. We offer adult and children’s frames. Our 2 ABOT (American Board of Opticianry Certified) Opticians on staff are experts in complicated pediatric eyewear.
Several brand name products we offer include:
• Varilux Progressive bifocals
• Transition Photochromic lenses
• Crizal / Avanc'e Anti- Reflective coating containing Scotchguard that eliminates annoying glare and reflections
• A Large selection of frames that feature an included polarized sunclip

Ophthalmic Pharmacy
We offer a fully dedicated ophthalmic pharmacy, conveniently located on the 3rd floor of the Callahan Eye Hospital for both physicians and patients to utilize. We provide services for our patients receiving specialty eye care in our Emergency Room, Laser Center, Inpatient Unit, Recovery Area, Operating Room, and Lion's Eye Clinic.
