Giving to the Women and Infants Center

Alabama's Women and Babies Need Your Help

For mothers and babies with special medical needs, UAB may be the best qualified, and often the only qualified, source of care in our state. We provide the highest level of care for:

  • Women with pregnancies that may present a higher risk to themselves or their baby
  • A baby born too soon or too sick to remain in a regular hospital nursery
  • Women with complicated gynecological cancers or other complex gynecological problems

UAB provides a critically important clinical safety net for Alabama's women and infants because,

  • UAB operates Alabama's only comprehensive Regional Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (RNICU), capable of caring for babies with cardiac problems and other congenital anomalies.
  • At UAB, neonatologists and maternal-fetal-medicine physicians are onsite 24 hours a day/seven days a week to immediately care for a baby or mother with complications.
  • UAB is the only comprehensive gynecological cancer program affiliated with a nationally designated Comprehensive Cancer Center.
  • UAB researchers continue to translate laboratory research into approved and more effective approaches for diagnosis and treatment.
  • UAB's physicians and programs are nationally recognized for quality of care and quality outcomes year after year.

Sadly, the demand for UAB's specialized women's and infants' services has increased by approximately 50 percent in the last decade, reflecting increased incidences of prematurity, low birth weight, high risk pregnancies and gynecological problems. In response, UAB, and its caring team of nationally and internationally recognized physicians, nurses and other professionals, continues to expand and improve programs to compassionately and expertly serve the growing numbers of patients who need our help.  In spring 2010, UAB will open a new 400,000+ square foot state-of-the-art Women & Infants Center, providing a world-class setting for care of pregnant women, sick newborns and women with gynecological cancers or other problems.

We Cannot Do It Alone

As we to continue to meet the growing need for women's and infants' care, particularly in these challenging times, we need your help. You can make a difference by supporting:

  • Much needed new facilities
  • Clinical programs for neonatal and maternity care, infertility, urogynecology, gynecological oncology or other women's health problems.
  • Programs that offer an extra measure of caring and support for patients facing the emotional challenges that come with a sick baby, a difficult pregnancy or a loved one with gynecological cancer

Your gift, large or small, can touch the littlest and newest lives, see a woman through a tough pregnancy, help a wife and mother beat a cancer diagnosis, provide needed childbirth and newborn care education to a first-time mom or comfort a family facing a loss.
